NYCDOE Teach-in

Segregation in Our Schools

A teach-in is a practical, participatory, and action-oriented forum where a specific political or social justice concern is discussed as an opportunity to raise awareness, promote dialogue. With knowledge and multiple perspectives brought by facilitators, panelists, and colleagues we hope to empower those who participate to engage in critical thinking and continuous learning to make informed decisions as it relates to their work and their awareness of the issue at hand: School Segregation.

Led by employees across the DOE who are dedicated to creating a truly anti-racist public education system in New York City. We invite you to join us on Friday, December 18 for a day of discussion and growth.

To experience the full teach-in, we recommend participants to attend all three sessions. Full-Day Session Schedule:

Podcasts

School Colors - Season 2

School Colors is a narrative podcast from Brooklyn Deep about how race, class, and power shape American cities and schools.

A collaboration with NPR Code Switch, School Colors Season 2 takes us to Queens, N.Y. – often touted as the most racially diverse place in the world announced in 2019 district 28 that they were chosen to get a "diversity plan."

School Colors - Season 1

School Colors is a narrative podcast from Brooklyn Deep about how race, class, and power shape American cities and schools.

They follow generations of parents and educators fighting for their children and their community in a rapidly changing Black and Puerto Rican neighborhood of Ocean-Hill Brownsville District 23 in Brooklyn, New York before school district lines were drawn.

Nice White Parents

Nice White Parents” is about building a better school system and what gets in the way.
The narrated podcast looks at the 60-year relationship between white parents and the public school down the block, on the border of School District 15 and the role 'Nice White Parents' play in school segregation.

Miseducation

A team of eight student interns takes you inside the largest and most segregated high school system in the nation for a close look at the inequities that elevate one group to success and confine others to second-class schooling with the hope to provide solutions that move us closer to the city's vision of equity and excellence for all children.

School Book

WNYC is raising the questions and fostering conversations that we hope will lead us all someplace new. What kind of communities do we want, in our children’s schools and our neighborhoods? And what will it take to get there?

Flatbush + Main

By the Brooklyn Historical Society, Flatbush + Main explores Brooklyn's past and present through scholarly discussions, historical archives, and oral histories.
